Fun Facts
According to a study by Robert Maue, a professor of physiology and neurobiology at the Dartmouth Medical School, out of all the aquatic mammals, the Weddell seal has the greatest ability to manipulate its body's internal function in order to conserve oxygen and preserves the oxygen flow to the brain. (2) The Weddell Seal has the best diving reflex of the elite diving mammals.
The levels of myoglobin in muscle tissue can now be used to trace evolutionary lineage. When compared to other land mammals, the myoglobin levels in elephants resembles that of a manatee more closely than another mammal. (5) (see figure 1)
Weddell seal milk is one of the richest produced by any mammal. It contains about 60% fat

Manatees have extremely good eyesight despite the small size of their eyes. In addition, despite the fact that they have no external auditory organs, they have very good hearing. This is because the bones in their inner ears are very large
Elephant females can have babies until they are about 50 years old, and have one every two to four years
